Freelance proofreading and copy-editing service

Rates and practicalities

For academic proofreading (students), I charge a flat rate of just £11.00 per 1,000 words, although I may have to charge a premium rate if you require me to work to a particularly tight deadline. I prefer payment via bank transfer, but can also accept payment via PayPal (a surcharge is added to cover costs). A ten per cent deposit is required before I begin work, with the remainder being payable upon completion.

For all other work, I charge a variable hourly rate depending on the complexity of the job. Please contact me to discuss your requirements.

Please email me first before sending any documents, detailing what you need done and any specific requirements. Useful information to let me know includes word count, deadline and when you plan to send it to me. A sample may also be helpful for larger jobs. I will endeavour to get all work completed and returned within your specified time-frame; if this is unlikely to be possible, I will let you know before I take on the work.

I generally work remotely, sending and receiving documents via email, or through Dropbox or other file transfer services for larger files. I use the ‘track changes’ function in Microsoft Word to make corrections and suggestions for changes and add any comments or questions. These amendments are clearly shown in red, and you then have the option of accepting or amending the changes. I use Adobe Reader to edit PDFs, marking up changes with the annotation tools. I can also work on paper, using the standard proofreading symbols where appropriate. Please email me to discuss your requirements and what the job will entail.
