My name is Vicki Sennett, I live in Kent and I work from home as a freelance proofreader and copy-editor. I set up Fool-proofs in late 2010 as a way of combining my love of writing and my eye for detail – at the same time as hopefully making some money! Prior to editing, I spent ten years as a primary school teacher; I trained for a PGCE after getting a degree in social psychology and then spending a couple of years working for the Inland Revenue (please don’t hold it against me!). After I had my second child I decided that it was time for a change in career, and so I trained in proofreading and copy-editing – and Fool-proofs was born!
I have trained with both the Chartered Institute of Editors and Proofreaders (formerly the SfEP) and the Publishing Training Centre, and I am a professional member of the CIEP. My work has involved a variety of different aspects of editing over the years, from proofreading educational texts, self-published novels and doctoral theses to checking school reports and working in-house for a housing association. Regular clients include Bloomsbury Education, the Chartered College of Teaching and the Historical Association. My specialisms are education and psychology, with additional interests in parenting, child development and travel. However, I am happy to work on texts in most genres and formats!
When I’m not working, it’ll come as no surprise to know that I am a voracious reader, and I also enjoy writing. I am a keen quizzer, and Wednesday nights find me at my weekly pub quiz with my regular team of over 20 years. I attempt to keep fit with Zumba, Pilates and lots of walking – there’s nothing like a long walk outside to fill you with a new enthusiasm for life! My other main interest is travel – I go on holiday at every opportunity and love all types of holiday, from camping to the Caribbean!
